Ken Robinson: Schools Kill Creativity?

Schools can be a place where creativity is cultivated. This would be an excellent video to play in a creative writing class to stir up some conversation about creativity in schools!

From TED.com: Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges the way we're educating our children. He champions a radical rethink of our school systems, to cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

Downloadable Presentation: Writing From Experience

This is part of a series of free, downloadable presentations you can use with your class. I always embed the presentation so you can take a look at it, and then provide a link were you can download the complete file to your computer and use it or adapt it to fit your specific needs.

This presentation is excellent for beginning a unit on essay writing or creative non-fiction. It's concise, but may need to be adapted for younger audiences. I invite you to download the .pptx file, and use it however you need!

Note: The red X on the presentation is just a GoogleDocs hiccup. The actual presentation should have no issues once you download it for your own personal use.

Downloadable Presentations: 7 Group Creativity Boosting Activities

This is part of a series of free, downloadable presentations you can use with your class. I always embed the presentation so you can take a look at it, and then provide a link were you can download the complete file to your computer and use it or adapt it to fit your specific needs.

This one in particular can be used in a classroom or with faculty.

Creative writing is as much "creative" as it is "writing". For some students who have signed up for a creative writing class on their own accord, being creative might be something they enjoy or that comes natural to them. On the other hand, there are the students who just need the credit, the ones who mutter, "I don't know how to start," or "I'm not creative." These games are excellent creativity and confidence boosters!

The goal is to remember that creativity isn't a contest. It isn't about who is the "most" creative or who comes up with the most intriguing, interesting idea. Creativity is, at its core, is really just bringing about ideas that weren't there before. We are creative all the time, every day, and this is a great way to demonstrate that!

There are tons of ways to use this presentation. Comment with your ideas and experiences!

I love using podcasts in the classroom because they really require students to listen. In a digital society where students expect to be visually engaged at all times, many learners are missing out opportunities to practice the fine art of listening.
